Wings.... - 12.0 hrs

This is actually an update for yesterday and today. Started out priming the angle pieces that go with the aileron brackets. Clecoed and drilled to the correct holes. You have to be careful with this stuff. Your wing is upside down on the bench. All of the plan sheets seem reversed for some reason. There are some rivets that need to be AN426 Flush vs the AN470 rounded heads.

Next I got the flaps and ailerons out from the upstairs bedroom where they have been stored. I mounted the brackets. One of the outboard brackets is skinny and ony has 2 holes in it. One of the brackets is not predrilled. I guess this is another one of Van's 50% rules like the elevator bearing brackets. Anyway I put them back to back in the vice and matched drilled to #30. Then I enlarged all of the holes to #12 to accept an AN3 bolt. Bolted them on and torqued. Last I test hung them on a couple of AN3 bolts. I still need to make the spacer bushings.

Next I moved onto the bellcrank. I had to remove the top bracket so as to install the long AN4 bolt so the nut is on top which is facing the bottom skin that is not riveted in place yet. See what I mean about paying attention to the orientation. I had to install a brass bushing so the bellcrank swings freely with the bolt tightened down snug. Works like a champ. Also have to make a spacer to mount on the torque tube bolt.

Last I primed and countersunk the flap brace. This brace gets riveted to the rear spar and matches up to trailing edge of the wing on the bottom skin. The hinge for the flap gets sandwiched between these layers. Really stiffens things up with this in place.
