More Cowl Work ..... - 6.0 hrs

Today started with more clean up on the cowl fiberglass work. Then it was on to the oil door.

First I marked an outline of the old door on the new piece to cut out. Then I used the new piece I made from laying up 7 layers to get the correct thickness and marked an outline of the cowl top. This piece will be trimmed and glassed in place to give a good bottom edge for the oil door to close against.

I appled clear tap to the door and taped in place to the top cowl. This allowed me to lay up some epoxy mix and layup the new piece to fill the cutouts in the bottom lip. Once this setup I then laid a layer of glass and mixture of micro, cotton fiber for strength. Once this setup I mixed up another batch of epoxy mix to lay into the edges of the oil door to build up the space which would allow the door to fit flush with the cowl top. This took 2 times to get correct and it still has one low spot. I may need to put in a small piece of glass to raise it up enough to be level.

This actually took time over the whole weekend as you have to let it setup each time before you sand down.

I installed the hinge and cut another piece to build up a stiffener to go between the door and the hinge. Next will be to make the cutouts in the door for the latches.
