Cowl Work and Cleanup.... - 6.0 hrs

First off I want to show the flag I had put up for Memorial Day in my front yard again. This is the 2nd year the boy scounts in the neighborhood have done this for all flag Holidays and this is a big one. We RV builders would not be able to do what we do if it were not for our men and women in the Armed Forces fighting for our freedoms. My dad is one of those folks. He spent 20 years in the Navy during the Vietnam era. Thanks DAD! I love ya!

Holidays are always fun at Weiser because lots of planes come by. And with the economy the way it is things have really slowed down. I got the last 2 holes done on each side of the bottom cowl and finished riveting the cam locks in place. While I had everything off I locked all of the completed cams in place and will get these last 4 done when I put the bottom on for final fit. They work great. Then right as I was finishing here comes Willey in his Super Decathlon and turns in front of the hangar blowing all of the freshly mowed grass into the hanger destroying all of the cleanup from yesterday. So back out with the plane and out with the broom. Didn't take to long this time since it was freshly done. Then I changed out the plug dehydrator stuff since some were pink. All Blue again.

Next I started on the oil door. I have both types of latches so I need to decide. I am going to write an email to Rick Galati on the VAF forum to see what he likes best since he has done them both. I think I like the round cams and it looks easier. But today I can at least get the hole cut. Started out with drilling holes in the corners and then used the dremel to cut the hole to the four corners. Next I filed the edges smooth. Looks great. I trimmed the cutout square and I will use that like Rick did to double up the door thickness. This will help keep it from flexing with the airpressure in flight.

Jim Bonannon from Sport Flyers came into Weiser today. I had met him a few times before when he came by with his Starduster and again with his RV6. When he was leaving I went over to check out the plane. Its a Miget Mustang and it hauls butt! I took a few pics on takeoff and Jim held it down low for a pass and then came back around and made a highspeed photo pass. I need a faster camera as this was all I could catch. What a neat plane - Thanks Jim!
